More than 110 pupils joined a 5-kilometre fun run at Othoo Abwao Comprehensive School.

The Hazel Okulo Foundation organised the event to promote health, fitness, and community support among the students.

The run included Foundation Executive Director Nyobugi Okulo, teachers, and community members. This colourful cross-country event is now in its second year.

During the run, Okulo explained that the goal is to motivate children to live healthy lives and to remind them that the community cares about their well-being.

“This 5K run supports the children, encourages them to stay healthy, and shows that the community stands with them,” she said. “We want them to grow up knowing they can enjoy healthy living.”

Okulo mentioned that the foundation’s involvement with the school feels personal, as her family has been connected to it for nearly twenty years.

She said the organisation is driven by a strong sense of giving back. Besides sports, the foundation runs a school feeding programme that has made a real difference for the students.

It offers nutritious meals during the week, which helps keep children in school, improves their focus, and supports better academic results.

Teachers have noticed the feeding programme has also led to more children enrolling, as families feel encouraged to send their kids to school.

The winners in both boys’ and girls’ categories received backpacks and math sets.

Six top performers were recognized: Dodian Anyango (Grade 9), Maryanne Akinyi (Grade 9), Godfrey Onyango (Grade 9), Wycliffe Omondu (Grade 9), Almerick Ochieng (Grade 9), and Janet Atieno (Grade 9).

Okulo urged other organisations to back similar efforts and reminded them that even small contributions matter. “Start small and do your part. Every bit helps. These are our children and our future,” she said.
