Religious leaders from across Kenya, including the Nyanza region, are planning a major interdenominational prayer meeting in response to rising global tensions and a deepening energy crisis.

The event will be held in August at Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground in Mamboleo, Kisumu, and is expected to attract more than 50,000 people.

The organisers say the gathering comes at a time when global oil supply chains are under pressure, pushing up fuel prices and inflation in many countries.

The event Coordinator Bishop Dr. Fred Akama said ongoing conflicts in parts of the world are contributing to economic uncertainty.

“Conflicts involving countries such as Russia, Ukraine, and Iran are creating instability. Fuel prices remain volatile, and inflation is rising in many economies,” he said.

He added that the main goal of the meeting is to pray for peace, stability, and relief for countries facing economic and social pressure.

The event is expected to draw both local and international religious leaders. Nigerian preacher Johnson Suleman is among those expected to attend, alongside other clerics from different parts of the world.

Kisumu County has backed the initiative and is working with organisers to prepare for the event. Sports and Cultural Heritage Executive Committee Member Beatrice Odongo, who represented Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, said the county will provide support.

She noted that the county sees the meeting as an opportunity to promote Kisumu as a centre for faith-based activities and regional unity.Organisers say delegates are expected from East Africa, as well as Europe, Asia, and the United States.

Local religious leaders across Nyanza are also mobilising participants from different denominations, including Muslim leaders, to encourage unity.

Coordinator Phoebe Onyango said the meeting is also a response to global economic challenges linked to conflict.

“War is affecting economies. It is disrupting oil supply and increasing the cost of living,” she said. She added that the prayers will also focus on peace and stability in Kenya ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Organisers say the event will bring together faith leaders and the public to reflect on global challenges and promote a message of peace, unity, and hope.
