An institution founded on the principle that talent and practical skills deserve formal recognition alongside academic qualifications has held its first graduation ceremony, marking the culmination of a vision more than 20 years in the making.

The African Talent University graduated its inaugural class on Saturday in Kisumu, bringing together students, parents, educators, government officials, entrepreneurs and development partners.

Among those graduating was musician Prince Hinda, reflecting the university’s focus on nurturing talent beyond conventional academic pathways.

Addressing the ceremony, the university’s founder and sponsor, Professor Humphrey Oborah, said the institution was established to identify, develop and certify talent regardless of where it is acquired.

“People should not be judged solely by academic certificates but also by the talents, experience and competencies they possess,” he said.

Prof. Oborah said the graduation represented the realization of a concept he first developed more than two decades ago.

He described the milestone as the result of years of research, policy engagement, curriculum development and institutional planning.

The university’s model seeks to integrate talent development with formal education, allowing learners to gain recognition for skills, innovation and demonstrated competence.

A central feature of the event was an exhibition showcasing projects developed by graduates, including business ventures, technological innovations, creative works and community initiatives.

Visitors engaged exhibitors on potential partnerships, mentorship and investment opportunities.

Prof. Oborah said the institution aims to strengthen links between education and economic opportunity by helping students transform ideas into viable enterprises.

Several business leaders attending the event said the projects highlighted the practical application of learning, describing the gathering as both a graduation ceremony and a platform for innovation and entrepreneurship.

Kisumu County Chief Officer for Education Bovince Ochieng said the university’s approach could help strengthen connections between higher education, industry and economic development.

He added that the institution contributes to Kisumu’s emergence as a centre for educational innovation and talent development.

One graduate who attracted particular attention was Joel Kariuki, who received qualifications in multiple disciplines during the ceremony.

His achievement prompted discussion among educators and parents about the ability of traditional education systems to accommodate learners with strengths across several fields.

Prof. Oborah said the university’s talent-based learning approach enables students to pursue multiple areas of competence simultaneously, adding that Kariuki’s achievement demonstrated the potential of more flexible educational models.

The ceremony marked both the graduation of the university’s first cohort and a significant milestone in its effort to promote talent recognition, innovation and skills-based learning in Africa.
