Kisumu Central Member of Parliament Joshua Oron has pledged to prioritize flood control, agricultural development, infrastructure improvement and greater inclusion of youth and persons living with disabilities if elected Kisumu governor in 2027.

Speaking during a tour of Nyakach Constituency, Oron held a stakeholder meeting at Thurdibuoro High School before addressing residents at a public rally in Sangoro, West Nyakach.

The forum brought together teachers, religious leaders, elders, women, youth representatives, persons living with disabilities and local administrators, who outlined challenges facing the area and proposals for future development.

Participants called for increased representation of young people and persons living with disabilities in county leadership and development programs, saying the groups had been marginalized in decision-making processes.

Oron said his administration would seek to address those concerns. “I have heard you, and I have heard your leaders. There is a lot that needs to be fixed,” he told residents.

Flooding emerged as a key issue during the discussions, with residents citing recurring damage in Nyakach and neighboring areas including Nyando, Seme, Kisumu East, Kisumu West and Muhoroni.

Oron said flood mitigation would be a priority under his administration, pointing to interventions undertaken in Nyalenda through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF).

According to the lawmaker, the construction of dykes and drainage channels in the informal settlement has helped reduce flooding caused by overflowing rivers during heavy rains.

“What we have done in Nyalenda can be replicated in Nyakach and other affected areas. Flooding should not continue disrupting people’s lives every rainy season,” he said.

The MP also called for greater investment in irrigation farming, arguing that water discharged from the Sondu Miriu Hydroelectric Power Project could be used to support year-round agricultural production.

“The water leaving the power plant should be helping our farmers grow crops throughout the year. We must make irrigation work for our people and strengthen food security,” he said.

On infrastructure, Oron said he would work with the national government to improve roads across the county to enhance trade and access to services.

He also pledged support for reviving cotton farming in Nyakach, saying the sector could create employment opportunities and increase household incomes.

Residents further appealed for the establishment of a Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) campus in the area.
Oron, a member of the National Assembly Health Committee, said he would support the proposal.

“I sit in the Health Committee and I will pursue the establishment of a KMTC here even before the next election because our young people deserve opportunities to train and work in the health sector,” he said.

The first-term legislator has increased engagements across Kisumu County in recent months as political activity ahead of the 2027 general election gathers pace.

Oron is among several leaders who have expressed interest in succeeding Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, whose second and final term ends in 2027.

Other potential contenders include Nyakach MP Aduma Owuor, Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda and Deputy Governor Mathews Owili.

Political observers say competition for the county’s top seat is expected to intensify as aspirants continue building support bases across the region.
