Nyakach parliamentary aspirant Johnathan Okoth Opande has launched his campaign for the constituency’s seat in the 2027 General Election, seeking the endorsement of residents in his home village of Ramogi.
Speaking during a gathering dubbed the Ramogi Declaration, Opande, popularly known as Mullah, said he was better prepared to lead the constituency after years of political engagement and public service.
“I am now fit, mature and fully prepared to serve the people of Nyakach. The experiences I have gained over the years have made me a stronger leader,” he said.
Opande previously contested the seat against incumbent MP Aduma Owuor but was unsuccessful. He said lessons from past elections had strengthened his resolve to make another attempt in 2027.
His declaration comes as political activity begins to intensify across Kisumu County ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Owuor has already announced plans to vie for the Kisumu governorship, a move that could leave the Nyakach parliamentary seat open.
Opande, recently elected ODM Kisumu Branch Secretary-General, said he had overcome challenges that affected his previous bid and was confident of securing victory.
“I have overcome the obstacles that stood in my way before. This time, I am focused, determined and ready to win,” he said.
He called on residents to support his candidature and urged political leaders to reject violence during campaigns, warning that election-related clashes had previously caused injuries and suffering among families.
“Political violence has no place in our society. Leaders must take responsibility for their supporters and ensure campaigns are conducted peacefully,” he said.
pande also appealed for political tolerance, saying all aspirants should be allowed to campaign freely across the constituency.
“We should welcome every candidate who comes to seek votes in our villages. I expect the same respect and hospitality when I visit other areas during my campaigns,” he said.
The ODM official further encouraged young people to obtain national identity cards, register as voters and participate in elections, describing them as a key force in shaping the country’s future leadership.
“Youth must register as voters and participate in elections. They have the power to decide the kind of leadership they want for their future,” he said.
The 2027 Nyakach parliamentary race is expected to attract several contenders as political alignments begin to take shape ahead of the election.
