The government has assured Kenyans that their constitutional right to participate in peaceful demonstrations will be protected during the planned June 25 protests commemorating victims of last year’s anti-Finance Bill demonstrations.

Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo said security agencies have been instructed to safeguard both demonstrators and members of the public who choose not to take part in the protests, emphasizing that law enforcement officers will remain neutral while maintaining public order.

Speaking at Oriwo Boys High School in Karachuonyo, Homa Bay County, during celebrations marking the school’s elevation to Cluster One status, Dr. Omollo reiterated that peaceful and unarmed demonstrations are protected under the Constitution.

“The Constitution guarantees every Kenyan the right to demonstrate and picket peacefully and unarmed. We will protect those rights, but we will equally protect the rights of those who want to go about their businesses uninterrupted,” he said.

The June 25 demonstrations are being organized to honor Kenyans who lost their lives during nationwide protests against the Finance Bill in 2024.

The commemorations have sparked growing mobilization across the country.

However, Dr. Omollo warned that individuals who engage in criminal activities or carry weapons during the protests will face legal consequences.

“We will not tolerate acts that threaten public safety or destroy property. Anyone found breaking the law will be dealt with accordingly,” he said.

The PS also addressed the increasing cases of student unrest reported in schools across the country, urging parents, community leaders, chiefs and village elders to work closely with school administrations to curb incidents of arson and vandalism.

According to Omollo, investigations have shown that materials used in some school fires are often sourced from outside learning institutions, highlighting the need for greater community vigilance.

“As parents and members of society, we all have a responsibility to guide our children and support schools in maintaining discipline and a conducive learning environment,” he said.

On education, Omollo commended the government’s efforts to strengthen the sector through increased funding and teacher recruitment.

He noted that approximately 100,000 teachers have been employed over the past three years, describing the achievement as unprecedented.

He also praised Oriwo Boys High School for its academic progress and growth, saying its elevation to Cluster One status reflects years of commitment by the school’s administration, alumni, parents and the wider community.

Dr. Omollo pledged continued government support for the institution, emphasizing that quality education remains a key pillar of national development.
