More than 200 interdenominational churches in the Nyanza region have declared their support for President William Ruto’s bid for a second term in the 2027 general election.
The churches, under the umbrella of the Nyanza Prophetic Clergy (NPC), said the president’s development record in the region had informed their decision.
NPC programme coordinator Dr Evans Ongati, accompanied by chairman Bishop Tom Obingo, said the clergy were aiming to mobilise up to 300,000 votes for President Ruto.
Dr Ongati said the organisation had established networks in Kisumu, Siaya, Migori, Homa Bay, Kisii and Nyamira counties to coordinate the campaign.
He credited the government with initiating development projects in the region, including road infrastructure and the proposed Standard Gauge Railway extension, saying these demonstrated the administration’s commitment to Nyanza.
Dr Ongati appealed to residents to support President Ruto’s re-election, arguing that a second term would allow him to complete ongoing projects.
He also said the church and the government shared common goals in education, peacebuilding and civic education, adding that the clergy were prepared to work with the state through their patron, Interior Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo.
According to Dr Ongati, the group has been supporting vulnerable members of society, including widows and orphans, with assistance from Dr Omollo.
He said the principal secretary had also supported the refurbishment of churches and contributed to fundraising initiatives.
He cited a recent church rehabilitation project in Gangu, Rarieda, as one of the programmes undertaken with Dr Omollo’s support.
The clergy group has also launched an internal initiative, “Team Dr Raymond Omollo”, which it says will focus on assisting vulnerable people and supporting church development across the region.
Bishop Obingo said many churches in the area lacked permanent places of worship or were in poor condition.
He added that the clergy had organised a series of fundraising drives to support church projects and help children from disadvantaged families access education.
The clergy called on Kenyans to pray for President Ruto and asked for wisdom for the country’s leadership.
