Authorities in Kisumu Central have stepped up efforts to combat rising crime by providing motorcycles to local administrators to improve patrols, emergency response and coordination with police.
Six motorcycles were handed over to chiefs and assistant chiefs on Monday in a move officials said would strengthen community policing and enhance security across the constituency.
Kisumu Central MP Joshua Oron said the motorcycles, funded through the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF), would enable administrators to respond more quickly to incidents, conduct regular patrols and work more closely with security agencies to prevent crime.
The constituency has recorded increasing cases of robbery, assault and gang-related crime, prompting authorities to adopt what Oron described as a more proactive security strategy.
He said Kisumu Central’s location, bordering several neighbouring subcounties, required closer coordination among security agencies because suspects often exploit the area’s interconnected road network to evade arrest.
Oron also urged the Kisumu County government to repair malfunctioning street lights, saying poorly lit streets had become conducive to criminal activity.
“Darkness provides cover for criminals. Restoring street lighting will improve the safety of residents, businesses and public spaces,” he said.
Kisumu Deputy County Commissioner Langat Bozek said the motorcycles would improve the mobility and effectiveness of National Government Administration Officers, allowing them to better serve residents and support security operations.
Beyond crime prevention, Bozek said the motorcycles would help administrators expand government outreach programmes, including identifying residents without national identity cards and improving access to public services.
He said administrators would continue working closely with police commanders at the sub-county, county and regional levels to address insecurity.
The government was also collaborating with the Children’s Department to profile street families as part of broader efforts to address factors contributing to crime.
Bozek also supported calls for the restoration of street lighting across Kisumu City, saying broken street lights had worsened security challenges.
