Kisumu Central Member of Parliament Joshua Oron on Monday called for a more coordinated effort to tackle rising insecurity in the constituency, urging chiefs, police officers and residents to work together to stem a wave of violent crime.
Oron said several people had been attacked, maimed, killed and robbed by criminal gangs in recent months, underscoring the need for stronger collaboration between security agencies and the public.
“Security is a collective responsibility,” he said, urging residents to share information with law enforcement agencies to help prevent crime and improve public safety.
The lawmaker spoke after donating six motorcycles to chiefs and assistant chiefs to enhance patrols and surveillance across Kisumu Central.
He handed over the motorcycles to Kisumu Central Deputy County Commissioner Bosek Lang’at during a ceremony held at the National Museums of Kenya grounds in Kisumu.
Oron said the motorcycles would improve the mobility of local administrators, enabling them to respond more quickly to security incidents and strengthen patrols in areas affected by rising crime.
He said many chiefs and assistant chiefs had been unable to effectively discharge their duties because of inadequate transport, adding that the constituency’s large geographical coverage and growing population had stretched the limited number of administrators.
“Kisumu Central is one of the largest areas, yet it has very few chiefs and assistant chiefs,” Oron said. He added that he would push for the deployment of more administrators to improve service delivery and security.
He also assured the Deputy County Commissioner of his support in addressing operational challenges, including fuel shortages that could hinder patrols.
Oron further appealed to Kisumu city authorities to restore non-functioning street lights, saying poorly lit areas had become safe havens for criminals who target pedestrians and businesses at night.
He urged city officials to assess the state of security lighting across the town and prioritise repairs to improve public safety.
Deputy County Commissioner Bosek Lang’at welcomed the donation, saying it would strengthen efforts by the National Government Administration Officers to combat crime.
Lang’at said the initiative complemented ongoing collaboration between the national and county governments on improving security following a recent joint meeting co-chaired by Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o and County Commissioner Mohamed Mwabudzo.
County Police Commander Hilary Toroitich and other members of the county security committee attended the event.
