The contest to succeed Nyakach MP Aduma Owuor in the 2027 General Election is beginning to take shape, with several figures expressing interest in the parliamentary seat.

Among those who have declared an interest are Nairobi businessman Jonathan Okoth Opande, also known as Mullah, journalist Trevor Ombija, climate policy expert Dr Johannes Atela, Polycarp Mburo and Nahason Angudha.

The seat is expected to become vacant if Mr Aduma proceeds with his plan to contest the Kisumu governorship in 2027.Mr Aduma has publicly backed Opande as his preferred successor.

Speaking during a fundraiser at Chiga Catholic Sub-Parish in Homa Bay Town Constituency over the weekend, Mr Aduma introduced Mr Opande to a gathering attended by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders and government officials.

The event was hosted by Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma and attended by ODM Deputy Party Leader Dr Oburu Oginga.

“I am going for the Kisumu gubernatorial seat in 2027. I am leaving this seat to my brother, Hon. Opande. Can you come here so that people can see you,” Aduma said.

His remarks were seen by political observers as an endorsement of Mr Opande, who is the Secretary General of the ODM Kisumu County branch.

In recent months, Opande has stepped up his public engagements across Nyakach, meeting youth, women’s groups and community leaders, while also attending church events and local development activities.

During one of the meetings, Opande said improving security along the Nyakach-Kericho border would be one of his priorities if elected.

“The people living along our border deserve to live without fear. Protecting lives and property must remain a priority, and we must strengthen security measures to end cattle theft,” he said.

Residents along the Nyakach-Kericho border have for years raised concerns over cattle rustling and attacks, which have resulted in deaths, injuries and the loss of property.

Opande said his interest in the issue was informed by his own experiences growing up in the area.

“I know the pain these families go through because I experienced it while growing up. Such insecurity disrupted our education and affected many families. That is why finding lasting solutions is personal to me,” he said.

Political analysts say Opande’s position within ODM and his association with Aduma could influence the party’s nomination contest.

However, they also expect a competitive race because of the number of aspirants seeking the seat.

Opande said his campaign would focus on engaging residents and outlining his plans for the constituency.

“Leadership is about serving the people, listening to their concerns and working with them to improve their lives. That is the commitment I bring to Nyakach,” he said.

Although the official campaign period has not begun, political activity surrounding the Nyakach parliamentary seat is already gathering pace ahead of the 2027 General Election.
