The head of CITAM Church in Kenya, Bishop Calisto Odede, has called for political tolerance ahead of the country’s next General Election.
The bishop warned that rising political tensions in recent months could escalate if leaders fail to exercise restraint.
Speaking during a prayer breakfast at CITAM Church in Kisumu, attended by local leaders, Bishop Odede urged Kenyans to avoid inflammatory remarks that could fuel division and conflict.He said careless political statements risk sending the wrong message and increasing tensions.
Bishop Odede also stressed that the Church is not in opposition to the government, but has a responsibility to speak out on issues affecting the country.
He called for dialogue to address challenges including insecurity and the rising cost of living.
Among those attending the event were Kisumu West MP Rosa Buyu, Kisumu Central MP Dr Joshua Oron, Kisumu City Manager Abala Wanga, and Kisumu County Assembly Speaker Elisha Oraro.
Buyu urged political leaders to promote peace and unity as the country prepares for the next elections.
She appealed to leaders to avoid actions or statements that could create unnecessary tension.
Dr Oron expressed concern over growing insecurity in Kisumu Central constituency and called on the city authorities to repair stalled security lighting projects to improve public safety.
Oraro said leaders should serve as ambassadors of peace and urged young people not to allow themselves to be exploited by politicians to cause unrest.Ends
