Two people have died and 26 others have been injured after a hearse carrying mourners overturned along the Muhoroni-Londiani road in Kericho County.

Police said the crash happened at about 4:50am on Thursday in the Tunnel area, around seven kilometres east of Fort Ternan.

The vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz bus belonging to Kupa Kenya Hearse Services, was travelling towards Muhoroni while transporting mourners escorting the body of the late Jayden Kamau.

According to police, the driver, 33-year-old Emmanuel Osembo, lost control of the vehicle before it veered off the road to the left and rolled over once.

Two passengers were pronounced dead at the scene. They were identified as 36-year-old Mathew Obiero and 21-year-old Margaret Areyo.

Twenty-six other passengers sustained injuries ranging from cuts and bruises to chest, spinal and head injuries.

Two of the injured were reported to be unconscious and were among those taken to hospital for treatment.

The bodies of the two victims were moved to St Vincent Mortuary for identification and post-mortem examinations.

Police visited the scene and recovered the vehicle, which was towed to Fort Ternan Police Station pending inspection.

The cause of the crash has not been established and investigations are continuing.
