Nominated Kisumu MCA Mickey Ochieng has announced that she will contest the Kisumu Woman Representative seat in the 2027 General Election, pledging to champion inclusive leadership and calling for peaceful political campaigns.

She made the announcement during a meeting with Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) polling station officials at the party’s offices in Kaloleni, where she urged residents of Shauri Moyo-Kaloleni Ward to support her candidature.

Ochieng, who contested the Shauri Moyo-Kaloleni MCA seat in the 2022 election before being nominated to the Kisumu County Assembly, said her leadership would be guided by accessibility and engagement with local communities.

She said she intended to work closely with women, young people and people living with disabilities.

Ochieng added that the Woman Representative position would give her a wider platform to support economic empowerment and community development across Kisumu County.

The aspiring legislator also appealed for peaceful campaigns, saying political violence discourages participation and disrupts economic activity.

She pointed to Kibuye Market as an area that has experienced unrest during previous political campaigns, arguing that instability affects traders’ livelihoods and hampers business growth.

Ochieng said she wanted all candidates to compete in a peaceful environment that would allow voters to make their own choices without intimidation.

Her declaration was welcomed by several grassroots ODM officials and local residents, who expressed support for her candidature.

Steve Odhiambo, a Kaloleni resident, said the community was ready to back her bid, while businessman John Oloo described her as capable of representing the interests of Kisumu residents.

Peter Obunga, chairperson of the Shauri Moyo Primary polling station, said Ochieng was the first Woman Representative aspirant to hold consultations with local party officials before launching her campaign.

Businesswoman Nathifa Omar praised the work of the current Woman Representative through the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF), saying she hoped Ochieng would continue programmes supporting women and small businesses if elected.

Shauri Moyo-Kaloleni MCA aspirant Adede Sheshe also endorsed her candidature, describing her decision to contest the seat as a positive step.

Ochieng is among the first politicians to publicly declare an interest in the Kisumu Woman Representative race ahead of the 2027 General Election, with her campaign centred on accessibility, inclusive leadership and peaceful politics.
