The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has signaled a major political shift, indicating that it no longer sees its future in the opposition politics once championed by the late Raila Odinga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Party leader Dr. Oburu Oginga and chairperson Gladys Wanga have openly declared that ODM intends to remain aligned with the government ahead of the 2027 General Election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking at the ODM Kisumu Central offices before hundreds of supporters, Wanga said the party had already made its political choice and would not return to the opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe opposition bus is already full without ODM. We have no reserved space there. Our place is on the government side, and we are not boarding the opposition bus,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\nODM party chairperson Gladys Wanga when she met party officials at the regional office in Kisumu.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Wanga was accompanied by Kisumu Central MP Dr. Joshua Oron, party officials, MCAs and grassroots mobilisers. Her remarks are among the clearest indications yet that ODM is redefining its political identity following Raila Odinga\u2019s exit from frontline opposition politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For nearly two decades, ODM built its reputation as a leading opposition party, championing constitutional reforms, street protests and resistance politics. The party played a central role in major political battles during the elections of 2007, 2013, 2017 and 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, Wanga said the current political environment requires a new strategy. She suggested that ODM sees greater political value in working with the government rather than remaining in a fragmented opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Political analysts say the party\u2019s leadership believes that staying close to power could offer stronger influence, access to resources and better positioning ahead of the 2027 elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wanga defended the move, insisting that ODM had not abandoned its core mission of protecting wananchi and upholding the ideals associated with Raila Odinga\u2019s legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She also highlighted the importance of the upcoming ODM rally at Kirembe Grounds in Kisumu, describing it as a key test of the party\u2019s grassroots strength ahead of 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\nODM party chairperson Gladys Wanga when she met party officials at the regional office in Kisumu.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
The rally follows the recent \u201cLinda Mwananchi\u201d mobilisation in Kisumu, which exposed growing divisions within opposition ranks and competition over leadership of the anti-government movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ODM now appears determined to prove that it still commands strong support across Nyanza despite changing political alliances at the national level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the same time, the party\u2019s declaration that it has \u201cno space in opposition\u201d is likely to deepen divisions within Kenya\u2019s broader opposition movement. Critics may interpret ODM\u2019s position as a sign of growing cooperation with President William Ruto\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier, Dr. Oburu Oginga appeared to reinforce Wanga\u2019s position, saying ODM must ensure it is part of the next government through strategic coalitions. He urged party members to strengthen ODM\u2019s support base while warning rivals seeking to work with the party to approach with humility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
