ODM party leader Oburu Oginga has sparked fresh political debate after declaring his interest in the presidency ahead of the 2027 General Election, just days after announcing plans to defend his Siaya Senate seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking during an interview with Ramogi TV, the Siaya Senator said he would seek the country\u2019s top seat if he secures backing from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oburu expressed confidence in his ability to compete against any presidential contender, citing his extensive political experience and long-standing role in national leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, he clarified that he would defend his Senate seat should ODM decide not to field a presidential candidate in the 2027 polls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI will defend my seat if the party will not field a presidential candidate. But if they agree to have a presidential candidate, then I am that candidate,\u201d Oburu said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His remarks are expected to reshape political calculations in Siaya County, where several aspirants had reportedly begun positioning themselves for the Senate race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ODM leader also addressed the growing political debate over whether President William Ruto should serve one or two terms in office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Oburu, taking a firm position on the issue at this stage could undermine ongoing discussions between ODM and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) regarding a possible coalition or power-sharing agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI find it difficult to say two-term or one-term because we are not in any agreement yet. If I do that, then our negotiations will lose objectivity,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His comments come amid heightened political discourse within ODM, with National Assembly Minority Leader Millie Odhiambo and Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga also weighing in on the one-term versus two-term debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In separate statements shared on social media, the two leaders maintained that the party\u2019s focus should remain on strengthening its structures rather than engaging in divisive political slogans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI said singing two-term or one-term doesn\u2019t help wananchi. Our focus is to strengthen and build our party,\u201d Ruth Odinga stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oburu also dismissed reports of a fallout between himself and James Orengo, who has recently been described by some supporters as the de facto ODM party leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He revealed that the two leaders are expected to meet soon to address what he described as perceived ideological and leadership differences within the party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have nothing against Ajimmy. Bishop Okoth of Bondo Parish had called us for a meeting, and I hope we shall have a conversation to see what he is not comfortable with. If it\u2019s my leadership in ODM, I have already been endorsed by the party\u2019s NDC,\u201d Oburu said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
