Mr Odera said the border has experienced many skirmishes over the years, largely due to cattle rustling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“As we approach the 2027 elections, there is a need to continuously engage communities and encourage them to live together peacefully,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr Odera noted that peace and stability were critical for economic growth and social development, urging residents to reject divisive politics and strengthen community ties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also welcomed the participation of the local Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD), who raised concerns about young people being recruited into criminal networks linked to livestock theft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The youth must reject criminal elements and avoid politicians who incite them to violence,” Mr Odera said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Local administrator Judith Pande said the government remained committed to ending cattle rustling but stressed that community support was essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Cattle rustling is not an economic activity, and our youth should pursue lawful and productive ventures,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ms Pande urged parents and guardians to play a greater role in mentoring young people and encouraging them to engage in education, business and other income-generating activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Religious leaders attending the meeting highlighted the importance of moral values in addressing insecurity and crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n AIC representative Richard Bii called on families to strengthen spiritual guidance among young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Parents have a responsibility to guide their children and instil values that will help them grow into responsible members of society,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Residents from Nyakach and neighbouring parts of Kericho expressed concern over what they described as a growing risk of political violence as the country moves closer to the next election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Security officials praised the collaborative approach taken by local communities and leaders, calling for closer cooperation between residents, chiefs, religious leaders and law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They also warned of increasing cases of drug and substance abuse in the border region, saying the trend had contributed to rising criminal activity in Sondu and surrounding areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The meeting concluded with a joint pledge to strengthen community policing, promote peaceful coexistence and prevent conflict ahead of the 2027 polls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Residents along the Kisumu and Kericho border have renewed calls for peace and cooperation amid concerns over cattle rustling, political violence and rising drug abuse ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election.
