For decades, communities living along River Nyando have endured perennial floods that destroy crops, sweep away livestock, damage homes and force families from their land whenever heavy rains fall upstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The recurring disasters have turned flood mitigation into more than an environmental concern. <\/p>\n\n\n\n It is increasingly becoming a political test for leaders seeking public office, with residents demanding long term solutions rather than emergency relief after every rainy season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ouya said he would push for stronger dykes along River Nyando while lobbying for the implementation of the long delayed Koru-Soin multipurpose dam project, which has for years been presented as a lasting answer to flooding in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “The people of Nyando have lived with these floods for far too long.
