The National Assembly has passed a bill aimed at strengthening laws against match-fixing and other forms of manipulation in sporting competitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sports (Amendment) Bill, 2026, sponsored by nominated MP Irene Mayaka, seeks to amend the Sports Act to define and prohibit competition manipulation and set out procedures for investigating suspected cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parliament records show Ms Mayaka moved the bill for second reading on 29 July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposed law would criminalise conduct such as offering or accepting bribes to influence the outcome of a sporting event, deliberately underperforming to alter results, conspiring to fix competitions and using confidential information for betting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It would also give Sports Kenya a stronger role in dealing with suspected cases by allowing it to receive reports and conduct investigations in collaboration with law enforcement and regulatory agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investigations would have to be completed within six months under the proposed framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bill would also expand the jurisdiction of the Sports Disputes Tribunal, allowing athletes, clubs and other stakeholders to appeal against decisions made by Sports Kenya in competition-manipulation cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parliament said when the bill was introduced in March that existing laws had gaps that made it difficult to deal with match-fixing and other forms of manipulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If enacted, the legislation would establish competition manipulation as a specific offence and provide a formal process for investigating suspected cases and challenging related administrative decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move is part of efforts by parliament to strengthen the legal and institutional framework for protecting the integrity of Kenyan sport.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
