{"id":26371,"date":"2026-09-07T11:26:18","date_gmt":"2026-09-07T11:26:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thefocuspaper.co.ke\/?p=26371"},"modified":"2026-09-07T11:26:19","modified_gmt":"2026-09-07T11:26:19","slug":"government-clarifies-work-visa-rules-for-foreign-traders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thefocuspaper.co.ke\/index.php\/2026\/09\/07\/government-clarifies-work-visa-rules-for-foreign-traders\/","title":{"rendered":"Government clarifies work visa rules for foreign traders"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government has warned foreign nationals against engaging in employment, trade or business without the appropriate permits, saying visa-free entry does not give visitors the right to work in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government said some visitors had been misusing tourist and investor status to engage in activities that fall outside the conditions of their visas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investments, Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui in a statement on Sunday said the government would revoke visas where foreigners were found to be in breach of immigration rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The clarification follows remarks by President William Ruto on work visa applications for foreigners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kenya introduced a visa-free entry regime for visitors from around the world in January 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January 2025, it also removed Electronic Travel Authorisation requirements for citizens of most African countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kinyanjui said the changes had had a positive impact on tourism and investment and that it remained committed to implementing the policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it said the increase in the number of foreigners involved in retail and local trade had created a need to ensure that those activities complied with work permit requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Visa-free entry or exemption from eTA requirements does not in itself confer the right to engage in employment, trade or business in Kenya,&#8221; Kinyanjui said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"507\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/thefocuspaper.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/FB_IMG_1788780154279-1024x507.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26373 lazyload\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/thefocuspaper.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/FB_IMG_1788780154279-1024x507.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thefocuspaper.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/FB_IMG_1788780154279-300x148.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thefocuspaper.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/FB_IMG_1788780154279-768x380.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thefocuspaper.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/FB_IMG_1788780154279-680x337.jpg 680w, https:\/\/thefocuspaper.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/FB_IMG_1788780154279-200x99.jpg 200w, https:\/\/thefocuspaper.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/FB_IMG_1788780154279-20x10.jpg 20w, https:\/\/thefocuspaper.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/FB_IMG_1788780154279.jpg 1075w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em>Investments, Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui\/Photo: Courtesy.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said people intending to work or conduct business in Kenya remained subject to immigration, work permit and other regulatory requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government also highlighted Kenya&#8217;s commitments under the East African Community, which provides for the free movement of people and goods among member states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It said enforcement of immigration and work permit rules would take those regional commitments into account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government said the implementation would be carried out &#8220;in an orderly and transparent manner&#8221; and in the spirit of the East African Community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kinyanjui said Kenya said it remained open to legitimate foreign investors and businesses that comply with the law and contribute to economic growth, job creation and development.<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The government has warned foreign nationals against engaging in employment, trade or business without the appropriate permits, saying visa-free entry does not give visitors the right to work in the country.
