The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) has approved the reservation of the name Linda Mwananchi Movement (LMM) as a political party name for up to 90 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The reservation follows a tribunal ruling that overturned the registrar’s earlier decision to reject the application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Registrar of Political Parties and Chief Executive Officer John Cox Lorionokou notified the applicants’ legal counsel, Bansbury Associates Advocates LLP, of the decision in a letter dated October 1, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal on Wednesday declared the registrar’s decision to reject the reservation of the name Linda Mwananchi unlawful and unconstitutional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a virtual ruling on September 30, 2026, the tribunal directed the registrar to reconsider the decision and issue a new determination within seven days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The dispute arose after the ORPP declined an application by a movement led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to reserve the name Linda Mwananchi, citing the existence of another registered political party with the same initials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The tribunal said the registrar had no legal basis for blocking the reservation and had breached provisions of Political Parties Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The approval allows the applicants to reserve the name for a period of up to 90 days, during which they can proceed with the next steps in the political party registration process.
