Siaya Governor James Orengo has raised concerns after his security personnel were allegedly withdrawn by the national government.

He said all the officers attached to his personal security and those guarding his Nairobi residence were abruptly withdrawn on Tuesday without any prior notice or official communication.

In a statement on Wednesday, Orengo termed the move highly irregular and deeply concerning, saying no explanation had been given by the relevant security agencies, nor had replacement officers been deployed.

According to the governor, security assigned to state officers is not a privilege but a constitutional and statutory entitlement meant to ensure the safety of public officials and the continuity of leadership and public service.

Orengo has now demanded an immediate explanation from the Ministry of Interior and National Administration and the National Police Service over the decision.

“I categorically demand an immediate, formal explanation from the Ministry of Interior and National Administration and the Inspector General of Police regarding the basis of this decision,” the statement read.

Despite the incident, the governor maintained that his administration would continue serving the people of Siaya with commitment and patriotism.

“However, we continue to do our work with enthusiasm and patriotism,” he added.

The withdrawal of security from a sitting governor is likely to trigger political debate and raise questions about the relationship between county leadership and national security agencies.

The government has not publicly responded to Orengo’s claims. The governor who has been associated with the ODM party Linda Mwanainchi faction has been fiercely criticising the government of high cost of life, especially hiked cost of fuel.
The seasoned politician and senior counsel has also been against broad-based deal with President William Ruto without proper working structure in place.

“We must always champion for the rights of Kenyans and how to better their livelihood. It is not bad to work together with the government but it should be done in a structured manner, not blindly, ” he said.
