Kisumu All Stars Football Club is expected to receive a new team bus from President William Ruto during a ceremony in Kisumu on Saturday.

The handover is due to be officiated by the president’s son, George Ruto, following a 12-team knockout football tournament involving teams drawn from the six wards of Kisumu Central Constituency.

The tournament, held on Friday, featured teams from informal settlements and was organised as part of the events leading up to the official presentation of the bus.

Steve Wonder, a member of the organising committee, said two teams were selected from each ward after consultations with local stakeholders.

“This was a knockout tournament and we expect the best-performing team to face Kisumu All Stars tomorrow at Mamboleo Stadium during the official handover,” he said.

Kisumu Central MP Joshua Oron said the initiative was intended to encourage greater youth participation in football and that there were plans to increase investment in the sport.

“We want to assure our young men and women in sports that elaborate plans are underway to put more investment in the football sector to attract more young people into the game,” he said.

Dr Oron added that all participating teams would receive sporting equipment and other items, and that organisers hoped to expand similar tournaments across Kisumu County.

Organisers said George Ruto had supported the tournament by providing playing kits and refreshments for the participating teams.

Steve Wonder thanked him for the support and confirmed that he would be the chief guest at Saturday’s ceremony.

Organisers say the initiative aims to promote grassroots football and provide young people with more opportunities to participate in sport, alongside wider government efforts to improve sports infrastructure.
