The government has stepped up preparations ahead of the October-November-December (OND) rainy season, with authorities warning of possible flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.
Government Spokesperson Charles Owino Wahong’o on Thursday said authorities are conducting risk assessments, identifying flood-prone areas and strengthening emergency response and early-warning systems.
The Kenya Meteorological Department will continue to monitor weather conditions and issue forecasts and advisories to national and county authorities, the statement said.
Heavy rainfall in some areas could trigger flooding and landslides, damage infrastructure and disrupt transport and essential services, while vulnerable households could be displaced, the government said.
Residents in flood-prone areas, particularly those living along rivers and in riparian reserves, have been urged to move to safer areas before heavy rains begin.

The government advised people not to cross flooded rivers, roads or bridges, or walk or drive through moving flood water.
It also urged residents to keep away from riverbanks and drainage channels, keep children away from flooded areas and secure important documents, property and livestock where possible.
Communities have been encouraged to work with county governments, local administrators and disaster-response teams to identify vulnerable people and support early evacuation where necessary.
The government also urged the public to rely on official weather forecasts and emergency advisories and avoid spreading unverified information.
“Early warning must translate into early action,” Owino said in a statement.
The government will continue monitoring the OND rainfall situation and provide updates as weather conditions change.
