Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) National Chairperson Gladys Wanga said on Tuesday that party leader Dr Oburu Oginga was recovering steadily and remained in high spirits after seeking medical attention at a Nairobi hospital.
Wanga said she visited Dr Obura who is also the Siaya Senator on Tuesday evening and urged Kenyans to continue praying for his recovery.
“Our party leader Dr Oburu is recovering steadily. I was with him this evening, and he is in high spirits. We continue to pray for his full recovery,” Wanga said in a statement.
Dr Oburu’s health has drawn public attention after he recently went to Nairobi Hospital for what ODM Director of Communication Philip Etale described as a routine check-up.
Etale said earlier that there was no cause for alarm and dismissed reports that Dr. Oburu had been rushed to hospital.
“Dr Oburu is back. He went to Nairobi Hospital for a routine check-up,” Etale said, adding that he had spoken to the senator on Monday evening.
Etale said Dr Oburu would reduce his involvement in political activities for the next few weeks before returning to active politics.
“He will not be actively involved in politics for the next few weeks or so. He’ll be back in the fullness of time,” he said.
He also urged the public to verify reports about Dr. Oburu’s health before sharing them, amid information circulating on social media and in sections of the media.
Etale said Dr. Oburu’s temporary absence from political activities should not be interpreted as a withdrawal from ODM affairs.
The communication director also said ODM and Dr. Oburu’s family had dedicated October to commemorating the late former party leader Raila Odinga and reflecting on the causes and values he championed during his political career.
“It’s not festivities. It’s just a commemoration,” Etale said, adding that the country had been invited to remember Raila.
