Residents of Kisumu have vowed to launch a WhatsApp fundraiser to buy Kenyan cyclist Victor Ngugi a new bicycle after a mechanical failure left him finishing last in the men’s junior road race at the African Road Cycling Championships.
Ngugi’s bicycle chain reportedly developed a problem on the final lap, forcing him to drop out of the leading group and walk from the Central Bank area to the finish line along Ang’awa Avenue at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Ground.
Spectators applauded him as he made his way to the finish line before carrying him aloft in recognition of his determination to complete the race.

The incident prompted questions from some spectators about the equipment provided to Kenyan cyclists, with several criticising what they said was inadequate support for young athletes.
Some alleged that Ngugi had been forced to compete on a bicycle unsuitable for professional racing.
Others claimed it had been bought second-hand from the Patels Flats area. These claims have not been independently verified.

One spectator urged Kenyans to contribute towards buying the cyclist a new bicycle.
“I have enjoyed the race, but the challenge is one. Kenyans, let’s be serious. Ngugi has been let down by his bicycle chain. That bicycle is not meant for this race. We must contribute even KSh1 to buy him a new bike,” the spectator said.
The proposed WhatsApp initiative is expected to mobilise well-wishers to support Ngugi, although organisers have yet to announce details of how the fundraiser would operate.

Zimbabwe’s Nicholson Rohnan won the race in 3:06:12 to claim the African title.
Despite the setback, Ngugi is expected to represent Kenya at the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, which are scheduled to begin on 31 October 2026.
The African Road Cycling Championships have attracted athletes from 32 African countries. The competition is due to conclude on Sunday.
