The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) has taken a bold step toward redefining healthcare delivery in western Kenya, unveiling a sweeping upgrade of its surgical and critical care infrastructure.

The milestone investment positions the facility firmly on the path to achieving Level 6A status, a move expected to significantly expand access to specialized medical services across the region.

At the heart of the transformation is the delivery of 92 advanced equipment units supplied by Sunview Medipro International Limited, replacing systems that have served the hospital for over a decade.

The hospital’s acting Chief Executive Officer Dr. Joshua Okise, who received the consignment alongside board members including Ms. Grace Essendi and Dr. Zablon Mokua, described the modernization as both urgent and strategic.

“This upgrade is essential for us to meet the growing demand for specialized care and improve patient outcomes,” Dr. Okise said.

A key highlight of the overhaul is the standardization of JOOTRH’s surgical wing onto the Mindray technology ecosystem.

This shift introduces full interoperability allowing machines within operating theatres and intensive care units to seamlessly communicate with each other.

The result is a more efficient workflow, reduced equipment downtime, and enhanced accuracy in patient monitoring.

Healthcare experts note that such integration is closely linked to faster recovery times and lower mortality rates, particularly in high-risk and critical care cases.

Among the new installations are six HyBase V3 operating tables and five HyLED C5-C5 surgical lights.

Designed for precision and efficiency, the operating tables allow ergonomic positioning for complex procedures, while the advanced LED lighting system minimizes heat exposure, helping prevent tissue dehydration during lengthy surgeries.

The equipment also brings a boost in surgical throughput. With “one click” repositioning features, medical teams can transition between procedures more quickly enabling the hospital to handle more cases daily without compromising safety or quality.

Patient safety has been further strengthened with the addition of six anesthesia machines and six EP 300 Electrosurgical Platforms.

The systems ensure precise delivery of anesthesia and controlled surgical incisions, which are particularly critical for pediatric patients and those undergoing high-risk procedures.

In the Intensive Care Unit, the hospital has installed more than 20 BeneFusion syringe and infusion pumps, alongside advanced BeneVision patient monitors.

Notably, the BeneVision N1 monitor accompanies patients throughout their treatment journey from the Emergency Department to the Operating Theatre and into the ICU ensuring continuous monitoring without interruptions or data loss.

Beyond the major equipment, the upgrade also addresses longstanding gaps in surgical support tools.

The new specialized accessories, including universal hip pads and ergonomic headrests, will replace improvised solutions previously used by surgical teams. The enhancement is expected to reduce complications such as pressure sores and nerve injuries during prolonged operations.

Dr. Okise emphasized that the impact of the upgrade goes beyond technology. “This investment strengthens the reliability of our services and enhances our ability to provide safe, specialized care to the communities we serve,” he said.

The upgrade signals a broader commitment to raising healthcare standards not just within the hospital, but across the entire region as JOOTRH embraces medical innovation.
