The Women Caucus of the County Assembly of Kisumu has called for respectful political engagement following recent remarks made by Siaya Governor James Orengo about Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga.
Led by Deputy Speaker Nereah Okombo, the elected and nominated female MCAs urged leaders across the region to uphold dignity, mutual respect, and constitutional values in political discourse.
Okombo while speaking at the assembly on Tuesday emphasized the importance of respecting women leaders and promoting unity in leadership.
“We are calling for civility and respectful engagement among leaders. Women in leadership deserve dignity and support as they continue serving the people,” she said.
The leaders said political competition should focus on development agendas and the welfare of citizens rather than personal attacks.
They reiterated that women continue to play a key role in governance, community development, and national progress.
Okombo further stated that the women leaders would continue pushing for accountability and respect for female leaders across the country.
“The remarks attributed to Governor Orengo are unfortunate and undermine the dignity of women in leadership. Leaders should promote respectful political discourse,” she said.
Shaurimoyo Ward MCA Caren Ajwang encouraged leaders to embrace constructive dialogue and work together for the benefit of the region.
South West Kisumu MCA Jenifer Akeyo also called for unity and collaboration among political leaders despite differing opinions on the country’s political direction.
The remarks come amid ongoing political debates within ODM over the party’s future and its broad-based deal with President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election.
During a recent rally in Homa Bay, Governor Orengo reaffirmed his long-standing political experience and commitment to the ideals he has championed throughout his career.
He further warned critics against dismissing his influence in national politics and emphasized that political differences should strengthen democratic debate and public participation.
“Go tell Wanga that I’m a politician she should not joke with. I have seen more politics than she has seen,” Orengo told supporters during the gathering.
The political disagreement between Orengo and Wanga has largely centered on the future direction of ODM and its relationship with President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election.
While Wanga has supported cooperation between ODM and the Kenya Kwanza administration as a way of advancing regional development, Orengo has maintained that the party should remain firmly rooted in politics, which is in line with the ideals championed by late ODM leader Raila Odinga.
The exchange has continued to spark debate within ODM supporters and political observers over the party’s future.
