ODM leader Dr. Oburu Oginga has ruled out any political alliance with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua ahead of the 2027 General Election, saying the party will only work with partners who share its values and treat it as an equal.
He said the party would pursue alliances based on mutual respect and common interests, dismissing the possibility of joining forces with Gachagua.
Dr. Oburu said ODM would instead strengthen relationships with political parties it is already working with in government and remain focused on building a coalition founded on equality.
“I cannot lead ODM supporters into an alliance with Gachagua,” Dr. Oburu said during a mega rally at Kirembe Grounds in Kisumu on Sunday.
The Siaya Senator urged party members to remain united as ODM prepares for a renewed bid for power in the 2027 election.
He described the Luo community as the backbone of the party and called on supporters to remain loyal despite changing political dynamics.
“We are aiming for power in 2027, and we are determined to achieve it,” he said.
Dr. Oburu also warned against attempts to divide the Luo community, arguing that unity has been key to the region’s political influence over the years.
He said political success depends on maintaining a common voice and shared objectives.He praised the large turnout at the Kisumu rally, describing it as a sign of ODM’s continued strength in one of its traditional strongholds.
His remarks come as political parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 election, with coalition-building and succession politics increasingly shaping the national debate.
The rally also provided a platform for ODM to reaffirm its commitment to the broad-based government arrangement.
At the same time, he called for action on school safety, compensation for victims of post-election violence, and a parliamentary inquiry into internationally funded public health programmes.
In resolutions adopted during the meeting, ODM leaders declared that the people of the Nyanza region remain united and that any current or future political engagements would be pursued through the party.
Party officials also reaffirmed their support for ODM’s leadership and endorsed resolutions passed by its key organs, including the National Delegates Convention, National Executive Committee and Central Committee.
The party further expressed confidence in its leadership structure, including deputy party leaders Simba Arati and Ahmed Abdullahi Mohamed, as well as Chairperson Gladys Wanga.
