Schools Urged to Install CCTV Cameras as Security Measures Intensify in Kisumu

Kisumu County Commissioner Mohamed Ramadhan has directed all learning institutions in the county to install closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras as part of efforts to enhance security and prevent incidents similar to the recent tragedy at Utumishi School.

Speaking during the Madaraka Day celebrations at Joel Omino Senior School, Ramadhan emphasized that the safety and security of students remain a top priority and called on school administrators to comply with the directive without delay.

He noted that surveillance cameras would play a crucial role in monitoring activities within school compounds and help avert potential security threats.

“All schools must install CCTV cameras to enhance the safety of learners and staff,” Ramadhan said.

The County Commissioner revealed that the county security team will conduct inspections across learning institutions to ensure compliance with the directive.

He also cautioned school administrators against placing CCTV monitoring systems in inappropriate locations, such as principals’ offices, saying surveillance systems should be managed by designated and trained personnel.

“I have seen such gadgets placed in the offices of school principals, and that is wrong.

The monitoring systems should be handled by the right personnel to ensure efficiency and accountability,” he said.

At the same time, Ramadhan addressed growing concerns over insecurity in parts of Kisumu City, where criminal gangs have reportedly been terrorizing residents and targeting property.

He assured members of the public that security agencies have intensified operations to curb the criminal activities and restore public confidence.

The County Commissioner urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement officers by providing information that could lead to the arrest of suspects involved in the attacks.

“We have put the criminals on notice. Those behind the attacks, including individuals who have been assaulting members of the public with iron bars, will soon be apprehended,” he said.

Ramadhan reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding residents and their property, adding that the police and other security agencies are working closely together to enhance security across the county.
