Kisumu Central MP Dr. Joshua Oron has called for increased investment in infrastructure and education, while welcoming the government’s efforts to bring economic policy discussions closer to local communities.
Speaking during the Grassroots Economic Dialogue forum at Migosi Primary School in Kisumu, Oron praised the National Treasury’s initiative to engage citizens directly on economic issues through the nationwide programme dubbed Gumzo la Uchumi Mashinani.
The forum dubbed Gumzo la Uchumi Mashinani, organised by the State Department for Economic Planning under the theme Faith that Builds, Measures and Leaves a Legacy,” brought together religious leaders, government officials and community representatives to discuss the implementation of the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Addressing the meeting in the presence of Principal Secretary for Economic Planning Dr Bonface Makokha, Oron highlighted development projects undertaken in Kisumu Central, including affordable housing and road construction.
“We have the highest number of affordable housing units in this region, and President William Ruto has also committed to additional road projects in the city,” he said.
The MP appealed for funding to complete a short stretch of road leading to Migosi Primary School before the national budget process is concluded.
“This is less than a kilometre of road, but it would make a significant difference to the school and surrounding community,” he said.
Oron also pledged support for students from the school who are seeking to participate in an educational trip to South Africa scheduled for August.
In addition, he announced that the Kisumu Central National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) would provide a school bus to the institution during the 2026/27 financial year.
“The school has requested two buses. We will provide one because it is a deserving investment,” he said.
The MP commended the school’s achievements in academic and co-curricular activities, saying strong performance should be recognised and rewarded.
Representing Kisumu West MP Roza Buyu, Susan Ochang joined other local leaders in supporting the dialogue initiative and stressed the importance of involving communities in economic planning.
Religious leaders attending the forum also welcomed the government’s efforts to decentralise economic policy discussions, arguing that meaningful economic transformation requires collaboration between policymakers, faith leaders and local communities.
Participants described the dialogue as an important platform for linking national policies with grassroots realities and ensuring economic strategies respond to the needs of ordinary citizens.
The Kisumu meeting was the second stop in a nationwide grassroots economic dialogue programme aimed at promoting inclusive economic growth and gathering public feedback on the government’s economic agenda.
