Gor Mahia Told to Prepare for Elections as Rachier Era Nears End

Kenyan football giants Gor Mahia have been instructed to begin preparations for fresh elections, a move that could end the nearly two-decade leadership of chairman Ambrose Rachier.

In a communication to the club, Sports Registrar Rose Wasike said Gor Mahia should initiate the electoral process in accordance with the Sports Act and Sports Registrar Regulations, which set term limits for officials of registered sports organizations.

“The club is expected to commence the necessary processes towards elections in compliance with the law,” Wasike said.

The directive follows years of engagement between the registrar’s office and the record Kenyan champions on governance and compliance issues, including the alignment of the club’s leadership structure with statutory requirements.

The officials affected by term limits are expected to vacate office once their mandates expire, clearing the way for new elections, according to the registrar.

The development places Gor Mahia at a significant crossroads, with Rachier’s long tenure potentially drawing to a close. He has led the club for close to 20 years, overseeing one of the most influential periods in its recent history.

During his stewardship, Gor Mahia consolidated its status as one of East Africa’s leading football clubs, winning multiple league titles and returning to prominence in continental competitions.

His tenure also saw efforts to modernise the club’s operations amid growing demands for professional management in football.

However, the club has also faced recurring financial challenges, governance disputes and administrative questions that periodically tested its stability.

Wasike’s communication further referenced concerns previously raised over governance practices, including issues related to annual general meetings, the establishment of a board of trustees and other administrative matters.

She said some of the concerns remain under review and that the registrar’s office would continue handling outstanding compliance issues through due process.

Attention is now expected to turn to potential candidates seeking to succeed Rachier, with members and supporters viewing the anticipated elections as a pivotal moment for the club.

Analysts say a new administration could bring fresh approaches to governance, commercial development and financial sustainability, while facing the challenge of maintaining stability and on field success.
