Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) Director Samuel Ongow has urged residents of Nyanza region to support President William Ruto’s bid for a second term in the 2027 general election, citing the government’s development record in the region.
Ongow, a former Kisumu County Assembly Majority Leader, said Ruto’s administration had brought development to Nyanza through the broad-based government arrangement.
He said residents should remain committed to the political cooperation that, he said, the late opposition leader Raila Odinga had championed, arguing that it had enhanced national inclusion and ended years of political marginalisation.
Ongow said the partnership had enabled the region to benefit from ongoing development projects and cautioned leaders against discouraging residents from working with the national government.
“After many years of seeking inclusion in government, the region now has an opportunity to influence national development from within,” Ongow said.
He was speaking during the funeral of Joel Odongo of Eco Clouds Consultants in Kowawa, Chemelil Tamu ward in Muhoroni constituency, Kisumu County on Friday.
“If staying in government is bad, then I don’t understand that logic. For many years, we fought to be part of the government. Now that we are finally there, why should anyone say it is a bad thing? What exactly does he want?” he added.
Ongow said Siaya County would support Ruto’s re-election campaign in 2027, saying the backing was based on the president’s development agenda rather than the appointment of members of the Luo community to Cabinet positions.
“We are not supporting President Ruto because he appointed Luos as Cabinet Secretaries. We have reasons to support him. He is the first President to recognize that people from this region deserve equal development like all other Kenyans,” Ongow said.
He said Ruto’s administration had ensured Nyanza was no longer sidelined in national development and vowed to campaign across Kisumu County in support of the president ahead of the 2027 election.
Ongow attended the funeral on behalf of Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda and said the senator also supported Ruto’s re-election bid.
Nyanza Council of Church Leaders Chairman Washington Ogonyo Ngede also endorsed Ruto for a second term during the event, saying the president had initiated development projects in the region that would improve livelihoods.
