Delegates of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in Kisumu West Constituency have endorsed lawyer Fred Odumo Nying’uro as their preferred candidate for the Kisumu Senate seat in the 2027 general election.

The early support for his bid comes as political activity begins to gather pace ahead of the polls.

The endorsement followed a meeting in Chulaimbo on Thursday attended by ODM grassroots delegates, who pledged to mobilise support for Odumo across the constituency.

Odumo while addressing the meeting urged ODM members to remain united, saying political cohesion within the Luo community had historically strengthened its influence in national politics.

He cited veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga as an example of a politician who garnered broad national support because other communities viewed the Luo community as politically united under ODM.

Odumo also criticised what he described as the growing trend of clan-based politics in Kisumu County, saying leadership should be determined by merit, integrity and the ability to serve the public rather than family or clan affiliations.

He urged party members and residents to evaluate aspiring leaders based on their qualifications, experience, track record and commitment to public service.

ODM Kisumu West Sub branch chairman Charles Aduogo said delegates had confidence in Odumo’s leadership credentials and believed he was well placed to represent the county in the Senate.

“We have carefully listened to Wakili Fred Odumo and assessed his leadership qualities. As delegates from Kisumu West, we are convinced that he has the competence, experience and vision required to serve the people of Kisumu County effectively in the Senate,” Aduogo said.

He said the delegates remained committed to strengthening ODM ahead of the 2027 election, describing party unity as its greatest political asset.

“Our message is that ODM must remain united because our strength has always come from standing together. A united party gives our people a stronger voice in national leadership and political negotiations,” he said.

He also echoed Odumo’s call to reject clan-based politics, saying voters should elect leaders based on their ability to deliver development and uphold integrity rather than ethnic or clan considerations.

“We agree that leadership is not about clans or tribal groupings. The people of Kisumu deserve leaders who are chosen because of their ability to deliver, their integrity and their record of service, not because they belong to a particular clan,” Aduogo said.

The endorsement is expected to strengthen Odumo’s early campaign efforts as prospective candidates begin positioning themselves ahead of Kenya’s 2027 general election.
