Ruth Odinga launches Kisumu governor bid, pledges action on insecurity

Kisumu County Woman Representative Ruth Odinga on Sunday declared her intention to run for Kisumu governor in the 2027 elections.

Ruth said she would prioritise tackling rising insecurity and improving public services if elected.

She made the announcement after attending a consultative meeting with party leader Dr. Oburu Oginga and Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications Steve Isaboke before joining mourners at the funeral of Mzee Joshua Oluoch and his son, Samson Oluoch, in Nyahera, Kisumu West.

Samson Oluoch, a security guard with JRS Security, was reportedly attacked and killed by suspected criminals near the Kisumu Cemetery area while returning home from work.

Speaking at the funeral, Ruth said the killing underscored growing security concerns in Kisumu and called for coordinated efforts by political leaders and security agencies to address the problem.

“Today, I officially declare my intention to contest for the Kisumu governorship in 2027. I am confident that, with the support of the people, we shall win and together make Kisumu safe, prosperous, and a county we can all be proud of,” she said.

Ruth said residents had faced increasing incidents of robbery and violent attacks in recent months, blaming some of the insecurity on poorly lit streets in parts of the city.

“It is unacceptable that some streets in our city remain in darkness because they have no functioning street lights. Darkness has become a hiding place for criminals, and our people deserve better,” she said.

She urged elected leaders to work together regardless of political affiliation, saying security should remain a shared priority.

“Security is not a political issue. It is a matter of protecting lives. Every elected leader must unite behind practical solutions that will restore peace and safeguard our communities,” she said.

Ruth said Kisumu’s elected Members of Parliament had held consultations with the party leader on measures to strengthen security and improve coordination with relevant government agencies.

“The death of Samson Oluoch should serve as a wake up call for leaders to move beyond promises and implement practical measures that protect lives and property,” she said.

Residents attending the funeral also called for urgent action, saying insecurity had affected businesses, restricted movement at night and raised concerns about safety in the county.

Ruth’s announcement adds to the early political activity ahead of Kenya’s 2027 general election, with campaigns for county leadership expected to gather momentum over the coming months.
