Women leaders from the Ford-Kenya party in western Kenya have declared their support for President William Ruto’s re-election bid at the next General Election.
The leaders said they believed the president had initiated several development projects in the region and argued that a second term would allow more to be implemented.
Speaking at a meeting in Kisumu attended by party representatives from different regions, Ford-Kenya deputy party leader Millicent Abudho said development projects undertaken under the broad-based government demonstrated the administration’s commitment to Nyanza and western Kenya.
She also said President Ruto had appointed several people from the region to positions in government.
Abudho condemned recent incidents of violence reported in parts of the Nyanza region, urging political leaders not to use young people to cause unrest.
She appealed to young people to reject attempts by politicians to recruit them for political violence, saying many were vulnerable because of unemployment and frustration.
“Some of the youths are hired as goons because they are idle,” she said.
Abudho called on President Ruto to revive the Kazi Mtaani programme, arguing that it would provide employment opportunities and help reduce youth involvement in violence.
She also urged political leaders to conduct peaceful campaigns ahead of the next General Election, saying women were often among those most affected during periods of political unrest.
The women who attended the meeting reiterated their support for President Ruto’s re-election campaign and also called for peaceful elections.
