The government has unveiled the design of a mausoleum that will honour former Prime Minister Raila Odinga at his gravesite in Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, Bondo, Siaya County.

The monument, which is expected to be completed within two months, is intended to preserve Mr Odinga’s legacy while serving as a national heritage and cultural site.

A groundbreaking ceremony presided over by Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya was held on Monday following the unveiling of the design.

The family members, government officials and political leaders gathered for prayers before construction work began.

Among those present were Cooperatives and MSMEs Development Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, ODM deputy party leader Oburu Oginga, Raila Odinga Jr, Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathew Owili and other members of the Odinga family.

According to the project’s concept brief, the mausoleum will have a five-sided design inspired by Luo cultural traditions and Odinga’s political journey.

The design also commemorates the Pentagon Alliance, the political coalition formed ahead of the 2007 General Election.

Project documents say the five-sided structure symbolises completeness and honour, while a clenched fist incorporated into the design represents strength, unity, solidarity and collective purpose.

The government says the mausoleum will protect Odinga’s final resting place while recognising his contribution to Kenya’s political history.

It is also expected to provide a venue for remembrance ceremonies, preserve aspects of Luo cultural heritage and serve as an educational site for future generations.

Officials say the project could also boost heritage tourism by attracting local and international visitors and creating employment opportunities during and after construction.

Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathew Owili welcomed the government’s decision to fast-track the project, describing it as a fitting tribute to Mr Odinga’s contribution to Kenya’s democratic struggle.

“The mausoleum will stand as a lasting national monument, preserving the ideals and sacrifices of Raila Odinga and permanently enshrining his immense contribution to Kenya’s democratic journey in our national heritage,” Dr Owili said.

ODM deputy party leader Dr. Oburu Oginga said the family was honoured to host government leaders and dignitaries for what he described as a historic occasion.
