A man has been killed and several others reportedly injured after violence broke out during a food distribution exercise in Nyando Sub-county, Kisumu County.

The incident happened on Wednesday at Hongo Ogosa in Katho Location, Kobura Ward, during an event organised by Nyando MP Jared Okello.

The circumstances surrounding the violence, including the fatal stabbing of the victim, remain unclear.

Witnesses said several people were seriously injured and taken to hospital for treatment. Police said they had not confirmed reports of other casualties.

Nyando Sub-county Police Commander Isaiah Mose confirmed that one person had died during the incident.

“We were not aware of the food distribution. The police only responded after receiving information about the violence to restore order and peace,” he said.

Mose said no arrests had been made, but investigators were pursuing what he described as a crucial lead.

“We are closely following a crucial lead into the matter,” he said, adding that investigations are ongoing.

The incident has been condemned by Kisumu County Assembly Majority Leader and Ahero Ward MCA Ken Ooko, who called for a thorough investigation.

Speaking by phone from Guangzhou, China, Ooko described the killing as “tragic and unacceptable”.

“It is unfortunate that a young man has lost his life during a food distribution exercise. This is unheard of,” he said.

Ooko urged police to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, saying previous food distribution exercises organised by the MP had reportedly been marred by confrontations.

“We’re not ready to lose our people. We’re not ready to have our mothers and fathers injured during this food distribution exercise. Something must be done to stop this nonsense,” he said.

He also expressed his condolences to the family of the dead man and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

Police took the body to Ahero Sub-county Hospital Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out.
