The Kisumu National Polytechnic (TKNP) has appointed Dr. John Wycliffe Odhiambo Okumu as its chief principal, replacing Catherine Kelonye Kayesi, who retired after leading the institution.
Dr Okumu, who joins the polytechnic from Kaimosi Friends National Polytechnic, officially assumed office during a handover ceremony attended by officials from the State Department for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), members of the institution’s Governing Council and other stakeholders.
Speaking after taking over, Dr Okumu thanked the State Department for TVET for appointing him to lead the institution and pledged to build on the achievements of his predecessor.
“I will build on the remarkable foundation laid by Kelonye and take the institution to the next level,” he said.
He said he would work closely with the Governing Council, the State Department for TVET, staff, trainees and other stakeholders to strengthen the institution’s position as one of Kenya’s leading TVET centres.
In her farewell address, Kelonye thanked the Governing Council, the Management Board, the Academic Board, staff and stakeholders for supporting her during her tenure.
She said she was proud of the progress made during her leadership, citing infrastructure development, academic excellence and institutional growth as some of the achievements.
“I leave with my head held high, proud of the legacy we have built together,” she said. Kelonye wished Dr Okumu success as he takes over the leadership of the institution.
The handover ceremony was presided over by representatives from the State Department for TVET, including Director of Trainer Management Lawrence Guantai, Director of Human Resource Management Mosiori and Under Secretary Priscilla Wanyere.
Among those in attendance were Governing Council Chairperson Eng Judah Ochieng Abekah, Governing Council members Ruth Mounde and Ismail Noo, Nyanza Regional TVET Director Audrey Monica and other invited guests.
