Education leaders and residents in Kisumu County have raised funds to help build an ICT laboratory at Ojienda Comprehensive School in Nyando, saying it will support digital learning under Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum.
The fundraising event on Friday was led by Awasi Onjiko Ward MCA Maurice Ngeta and brought together education stakeholders, community members and local leaders, who pledged financial support towards the project.
Ngeta said the laboratory would enable pupils to acquire practical digital skills without leaving the school.
“We were invited by the school, and we want to make our contribution to help build the laboratory. We want our learners to study ICT right here in this school,” he said.
He also praised the school’s Board of Management, parents and head teacher, Jennifer Jure, for supporting infrastructure development, and said he would continue backing education projects in the ward.
Albert Ojunyo, who attended the fundraiser, said communities should play a greater role in improving school infrastructure instead of relying entirely on government funding.
“Let us improve the status of infrastructure in our schools, and together we know we will go places,” he said.
Head teacher Jennifer Jure said the ICT laboratory was intended to improve digital literacy among learners and the wider community.
“We chose to build a computer laboratory because we do not want our learners or the community to be left behind in digital literacy,” she said.
Jure said the facility would support practical learning in science, arts, social sciences and other pathways under the Competency-Based Education curriculum.
Several speakers at the event also encouraged eligible residents to register as voters ahead of the 2027 General Election, arguing that higher voter registration would strengthen the area’s representation.
“Our future relies on our votes. We want everyone from this locality to register as a voter,” Ngeta said.
Guest speaker Joel Kemei, from Tinderet in neighbouring Nandi County, called on the Ministry of Education to invest more in school infrastructure in the region.
“The Ministry of Education should come in and support the learners in this institution because they have taken the initiative to put up an ICT laboratory,” he said.
The organisers said donations from leaders, residents and other supporters would go towards the construction of the ICT laboratory.
