Kisumu Central MP Joshua Oron has stepped up his campaign for the Kisumu governorship, saying his support for education and community development projects across the county demonstrates his suitability to lead ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking during a public meeting in Sidho, Muhoroni Constituency, Oron said his involvement in development initiatives began before he entered elective politics and reflected his commitment to public service.
He said he had supported the construction of classrooms in schools across several constituencies, including Nyando, Nyakach, Muhoroni and Seme.
“Even before I thought of vying for any political seat, I was building classrooms in schools across Kisumu County. I have always believed that education is the foundation of development,” he said.
Oron said he was seeking to succeed Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o at the end of his term to expand development programmes and improve livelihoods across the county.
He urged voters to assess candidates based on their track record rather than campaign promises.
“When leaders come asking for your votes, ask them one simple question: What have you done for the people?” he said. “Leadership should be judged by action, not by speeches,” Oron said.
Water access was among the priorities outlined by the legislator, who pledged to expand the supply of clean drinking water if elected.
Referring to his home area of Apondo in Nyando Constituency, Oron said residents continued to face shortages of safe drinking water despite frequent flooding.
“There is water everywhere, yet people do not have a drop of clean water to drink. That is a problem we must solve,” Oron said.
He also pledged to improve roads in the county’s sugar-growing and rice-producing areas, saying better transport infrastructure would help farmers access factories and markets more efficiently.
He further proposed establishing a women’s enterprise fund to provide affordable financing for female entrepreneurs, saying it would help expand businesses and strengthen household incomes.
“Our women deserve opportunities, not exploitation. We will establish a women’s enterprise fund that will empower them to grow businesses, create jobs and improve the welfare of their families,” Oron said.
Political activity in Kisumu has begun to gather pace ahead of the 2027 election, with prospective candidates increasingly outlining their policy priorities and development agendas.
