Police officer killed, eight injured during Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay

A police officer has died and eight others were seriously injured during the Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay Town on Sunday evening.

The officer, attached to Muhoroni Police Division, was hit on the head by a stone while driving his colleagues back to their station along the Homa Bay-Kendu Bay road.

Police said the incident happened between Olare and Nyangweso trading centres in Rangwe Sub-county.

The officer was taken to a hospital in Kisumu County but died while receiving treatment.

Homa Bay County Police Commander Lawrence Koilem said the officer was among those deployed to Homa Bay to reinforce security during the rally.

Eight other officers were injured during clashes linked to the rally.

Koilem said seven officers sustained minor injuries and were treated and discharged, while another officer, who suffered a serious head injury, was transferred to a hospital in Kisii for further treatment.

Police also arrested 22 people in different parts of the county. The suspects were allegedly found in possession of crude weapons and vehicles with concealed number plates.
