Kisumu County Assembly member Maurice Ngeta has urged young people and other eligible Kenyans to obtain national identity cards and register as voters ahead of the 2027 general election.

Ngeta, who represents Awasi Onjiko Ward in Nyando Constituency, said young people aged 18 and above should have identity cards and be registered to vote.

“The election is around the corner, and every Kenyan who is 18 years and above must ensure they have an ID and are registered as a voter,” he said.

He described the two documents as essential for citizens who want to participate in elections and influence the country’s future.

Ngeta also called on the Luo community to increase voter registration, saying a larger voter base would strengthen the political influence of the region and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) within President William Ruto’s broad-based government.

“The Luo nation must register to the maximum. The strength of our people in government will also be determined by the number of registered voters we have,” he said.

He said increased voter numbers would strengthen the region’s bargaining power and give its leaders a stronger voice in national affairs.

Ngeta cited Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi and Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi as examples of professionals from the region serving in the government.

He also praised Interior and National Administration Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo for what he described as efforts to ensure that young Kenyans receive identity cards promptly.

“PS Omollo has done well in ensuring that Kenyans who have attained 18 years get their IDs in good time,” Ngeta said.

He urged political and community leaders in Luo Nyanza to complement government efforts by encouraging eligible residents to register as voters.

Ngeta said he was working with Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) coordinators in Nyando to reach residents across Awasi Onjiko Ward.

He said the campaign would also help registered voters who had moved to new areas transfer their polling stations.

From next week, his team plans to target at least 100 new voter registrations each day, he said.

The campaign will target markets, schools, churches, funerals and other public gatherings where eligible voters can be reached, according to Ngeta.

“Our target is to mobilize at least 100 new voters every day,” he said.

He also called on parents to encourage children who have turned 18 to obtain identity cards and register as voters.

Ngeta said voter registration was a civic responsibility and urged young people to take part in deciding the country’s leadership in the 2027 election.
