Kisumu County Assembly Majority Whip Seth Kanga has criticised the state of development in Kisumu East Constituency, citing poor infrastructure and inadequate facilities in schools.
Kanga said many schools in the constituency were struggling because of a lack of essential facilities, which he said had contributed to poor academic performance.
Speaking at a fundraiser organised by Nomiya Church, Kanga also claimed that young people in the area were missing out on government opportunities because of what he described as poor leadership.
“We hear of leaders being given letters from the Teachers Service Commission, but that is not the case here in Kisumu East,” he said.
He said young people from other regions had secured opportunities in the security forces through the influence of their leaders, but claimed that youths in Kisumu East had not benefited in the same way.
Kanga is seeking to become the next MP for Kisumu East, a seat currently held by Ahmed Shabir.
He has intensified his campaign ahead of the 2027 elections, meeting church leaders, women and professionals in Kajulu, Kolwa East and Kolwa Central to present his agenda.
Young people at the meetings raised concerns over unemployment, while women called for more favourable terms for accessing credit.
Kanga promised to attract investors to Kisumu East if elected, saying creating a conducive environment for businesses would help generate jobs for young people and women.
He also said engaging young people in productive activities was key to addressing violence and goonism.
The head of Nomiya Church, Cardinal Archbishop Moses Oketch, pledged to support Mr Kanga’s bid for the Kisumu East parliamentary seat.
Archbishop Oketch said Kanga had consistently attended church functions whenever he was invited.
Meanwhile, Kolwa Central ward aspirant Mike Ongele called for peaceful campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections.
Ongele said women should be given greater opportunities to pursue political ambitions and urged leaders to avoid inflammatory rhetoric.
He also called on the Luo community to support the broad-based government arrangement and President William Ruto’s bid for re-election.
Ongele singled out violence witnessed in parts of the Nyanza region, warning that the trend could escalate if left unchecked.
He also urged Siaya Governor James Orengo to respect female leaders and avoid using what he described as abusive language at public forums.
