Luo Council of Elders chairman (Ker) Odungi Randa has called for unity within the community and urged political leaders to avoid statements that could reopen old divisions.
Randa was speaking in Kisumu, where he urged residents to put aside political differences and focus on development and issues affecting the community.
He said unity among men, women and young people was necessary to address what he described as longstanding concerns over political representation and leadership.
“Without unity among men, women and youths, those issues will remain unsettled,” he said.
Randa also called on political leaders to concentrate on serving the public and said residents should hold their leaders to account.
“If they want to play politics, let them do so, but for us, let us remain firm,” he said.
Randa criticises Uhuru’s remarks
Randa also criticised comments attributed to former President Uhuru Kenyatta concerning the political standing and legacy of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
He said political leaders should respect Odinga’s legacy and avoid reviving disputes over past elections and political contests.
“I condemn the statement of Uhuru Kenyatta, former President of the Republic of Kenya. I further condemn it in the strongest terms possible for reviving the issue of Raila Odinga,” Randa said.
Randa said disagreements over past election results should not be allowed to create fresh divisions.
“Whether his victory was stolen or not stolen, I’m asking Uhuru, let Raila be in his grave with peace,” he said.
He urged political leaders to stop using historical grievances to mobilise support, saying the community should instead focus on its future.
Call for unity
Randa urged Luo leaders to work together despite their political differences and said the interests of residents should take precedence over party politics.
He said greater cooperation among political leaders, women and young people would help the community address its concerns and pursue development.
He also warned against what he described as attempts by outside political forces to create divisions within the community.
Randa said the community should remain united regardless of individual political affiliations.
