The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) has approved the reservation of the name Linda Mwananchi Movement (LMM) as a political party name for up to 90 days.

The reservation follows a tribunal ruling that overturned the registrar’s earlier decision to reject the application.

Registrar of Political Parties and Chief Executive Officer John Cox Lorionokou notified the applicants’ legal counsel, Bansbury Associates Advocates LLP, of the decision in a letter dated October 1, 2026.

The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal on Wednesday declared the registrar’s decision to reject the reservation of the name Linda Mwananchi unlawful and unconstitutional.

In a virtual ruling on September 30, 2026, the tribunal directed the registrar to reconsider the decision and issue a new determination within seven days.

The dispute arose after the ORPP declined an application by a movement led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to reserve the name Linda Mwananchi, citing the existence of another registered political party with the same initials.

The tribunal said the registrar had no legal basis for blocking the reservation and had breached provisions of Political Parties Act.

The approval allows the applicants to reserve the name for a period of up to 90 days, during which they can proceed with the next steps in the political party registration process.
