Kisumu will host the 2026 Confederation of African Cycling (CAC) Road Cycling African Championships from October 21 to 25, with more than 300 cyclists from over 30 African countries expected to compete.
The five-day championship will feature 15 race categories for junior, senior and under-23 cyclists, including road races and individual time trials.
A 20.4-km mass fun ride will also be held on Oct. 24, giving local residents and families an opportunity to participate in the event.
Speaking at a media briefing in Kisumu, Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o said the championship would promote sport and public health while generating economic activity for the lakeside city.
“Sports in general are very important for the health and wealth of a society,” Nyong’o said.
County officials expect hotels, restaurants, transport operators, artisans and other businesses to benefit from spending by athletes, officials and visitors during the championship.
Nyong’o said previous cycling championships had generated about Sh 80 million in direct spending in their host regions over five days.
The county also expects the event to increase Kisumu’s profile as a destination for business tourism and international events.
The county estimates the championship could generate media exposure worth about Sh 450 million through international television coverage, including broadcasts by SuperSport.
“This event builds the name of the city and the County Government of Kisumu,” Nyong’o said.
The county government is working with the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), city authorities and security agencies to prepare roads and improve security ahead of the competition.
Nyong’o said some of the road improvements would provide a lasting benefit to residents beyond the five-day championship.
“The championship is temporary, but the infrastructure is permanent,” he said.
The event will also give Kisumu an opportunity to promote its location on the shores of Lake Victoria, its culture and hospitality to an international audience, county officials said.
Kenya is hosting the continental championships for the third consecutive year, following Eldoret in 2024 and Kwale County in 2025.
Nyong’o urged residents to turn out along the race routes to welcome athletes and visitors.
“Africa will be in Kisumu. Let us be ready,” he said.
