Siaya County Governor James Orengo has once again stirred political debate across the Luo Nyanza region after making remarks during his recent visit to Kabondo Kasipul and Kasipul Constituency in Homa Bay County.

The veteran politician, who has increasingly positioned himself as a key voice within ODM politics, spoke passionately about poor infrastructure, rising insecurity, and the high cost of living affecting ordinary citizens.

Addressing residents in Kadongo, Ringa (Kojwach), and later in Oyugis Town, Orengo said leaders must move beyond empty promises and focus on practical development that changes people’s lives.

His speech attracted huge crowds, with many residents listening closely as he criticized what he described as stalled development projects in Homa Bay.

“Leadership is about delivering dignity to the doorstep of every citizen,” Orengo told residents during one of the roadside stopovers.

“Our people deserve roads, hospitals, water, electricity, and security.”

The Siaya Governor pointed to abandoned projects such as the Ringa–Atemo and Kakelo–Kokwanyo roads, saying the delays have negatively affected businesses and transport in the region.

He also raised concerns over healthcare services at Rachuonyo District Hospital, arguing that many families are struggling to access quality treatment under the Social Health Authority (SHA) system.

“We cannot celebrate Last Mile electricity on paper while our villages remain in darkness,” he said, drawing cheers from the crowd gathered in Oyugis.

Orengo further compared Homa Bay’s development challenges to projects being implemented in neighboring Siaya County.

According to him, Siaya has focused on using county resources to establish long-term projects that can sustain communities economically.

“In Siaya, we are investing county funds in legacy projects that will outlive politics,” Orengo stated.

“Dependence on endless promises from the national government will not transform our people.”

The remarks have fueled speculation about Orengo’s growing influence within ODM, where some supporters increasingly see him as one of the party’s senior ideological voices.

Though he did not directly address national politics, his statements appeared aimed at pushing for stronger accountability among elected leaders.

Residents who attended the meetings echoed many of the governor’s concerns.

Traders in Oyugis complained about insecurity affecting businesses, while parents raised frustrations over rising school costs and unfulfilled promises such as the delayed school bus project for Atemo Secondary School.

“The cost of living is becoming unbearable for ordinary families,” Orengo said.

“Leaders must stop making promises they cannot fulfill.”

Political analysts believe Orengo’s outspoken style continues to distinguish him as one of the most vocal governors in the region.

His criticism of stalled projects and governance failures has attracted both praise and criticism from different political camps.

Despite the growing political conversations surrounding his remarks, Orengo maintained that his focus remains on improving the lives of citizens and ensuring development reaches marginalized communities.

“The journey to fix our region and our nation continues,” he concluded as supporters applauded and chanted his name in Oyugis Town.
