National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called on Nyanza residents to support President William Ruto for re-election, saying he remains committed to inclusive development and national unity.
Wetang’ula said President Ruto means well for the people of Nyanza region and deserves support for the second and final term to fully complete his development agenda.
He said Ruto has consistently demonstrated loyalty to his allies and goodwill towards all regions of the country, noting that he does not abandon those who stand by him.
“I know the President as someone who does not abandon people who support him,” Wetang’ula said during the burial ceremony of Doris Okello, the mother of Nyando MP Jared Okello on Friday.
Wetang’ula pointed to the appointment of leaders from the Nyanza region to senior government positions as evidence of the administration’s commitment to inclusivity.
Among those he mentioned were Attorney General Dorcas Oduor, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, and Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi.
The speaker said the appointments reflected the government’s intention to ensure that all regions feel represented in national leadership.
He also cautioned against what he termed as politics of entitlement saying leadership in Kenya should remain open to all communities regardless of ethnic background.
In an apparent reference to the Mt Kenya region, which has produced three presidents since independence, Wetang’ula said all Kenyans should embrace unity and national cohesion.
“Any Kenyan can become president. Leadership is a national responsibility that belongs to all communities equally,” he said.
Wetang’ula further urged ODM leader Oburu Oginga not to be influenced by critics but instead continue steering the party within the framework of the broad-based government arrangement.
At the same event, Dr. Oginga called on Siaya Governor James Orengo to avoid using derogatory language against fellow leaders.
Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi also appealed for respect among leaders regardless of their status in society. He added that ODM should field a presidential candidate in the 2032 General Election.
Wetang’ula concluded by urging residents of both Nyanza and Western Kenya to support President Ruto’s leadership and work together in promoting national unity and development.
