Cleric urges Kenyan leaders to tone down political rhetoric

A senior Anglican Church cleric has urged political leaders to lower the political temperature in the country, warning that heightened political activity and abusive language threaten peace and stability.

The Bishop of the Diocese of Maseno South, the Rt Rev Charles Onginjo, said the growing political tensions were unhealthy for the country and called on leaders to focus on service delivery rather than premature campaigns.

He was speaking at Masogo in Nyando Constituency during the burial of Wilkister Ayumba, the mother of Pastor Tito Antony, a junior cleric.

Bishop Onginjo expressed concern over political wrangling among leaders, condemning the use of insults and abusive language in political exchanges.

Without naming individuals, he urged politicians to sell their policies and explain their development agendas to voters instead of attacking one another.

He also cautioned Kenyans against accepting large sums of money being distributed by some politicians, warning that such handouts could have negative consequences if their sources were unknown.

The bishop called for peaceful campaigns as the country prepares for the next general election, expressing concern that some Kenyans had already lost their lives amid heightened political activity.

He appealed to political leaders to promote peace, unity and harmony, saying the country needed responsible leadership at a time of growing political tension.

Bishop Onginjo was accompanied by his Maseno East counterpart, the Rev Bernard Owuor, who joined him in urging young people not to allow themselves to be used by politicians to instigate violence.

The clerics warned that young people often bear the brunt of political chaos and urged them to reject violence and safeguard peace in their communities.
