Okaka leads KDF to victory in third leg of national boxing league

Hard-hitting light heavyweight Robert Okaka led Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to victory in the third leg of the national boxing league in Vihiga.

Okaka stopped Cosby Ouma of the National Police Service by technical knockout in their light heavyweight bout at Mumboha Stadium.

The referee stopped the contest in the second round to prevent Ouma from taking further punishment.

KDF topped the team standings with 23 points, ahead of their arch-rivals, the National Police Service, who finished with 17.

Nairobi County collected seven points, the same as the KDF women’s team, while the police women’s team managed five points.

In the light-middleweight division, KDF’s Alvin Oduor beat Joseph Shigali of the police on points. Kennedy Omollo of Kibra also won on points against KDF’s Lawrence Ombwachi in the middleweight division.

Kenya Prisons’ Vincent Alice outpointed Pius Macharia of KDF in the lightweight category.

Benedict Juma of Kasarani Youth Boxing Club stopped KDF’s Samuel Njau in another lightweight contest, while Peter Abuti of KDF stopped Vihiga’s Steve Okoyo in the super-heavyweight division.

Peter Omondi of KDF defeated Joshua Onyango of Kisumu County on points in the welterweight category.

In the women’s competition, Amina Martha of the police beat Nairobi’s Mary Anyango on points.

Police’s Abdala Juma also won on points against Isaac Karamba of Sombea in the flyweight division.

Damacline Boyani of Kasarani defeated Wangare of Kenya Prisons in the women’s 40kg category.

The tournament also brought excitement to residents of Luanda, where competitive boxing returned to the area after several years.

County sports officials said they wanted more sporting activities to be staged in the area regularly.

The fourth leg of the league will be held in Kisumu County.
